Aqueous 2013 Award Winners

Jennifer Yerdon LeJeune, Juror
Assistant Professor of Art at Fairmont State University

JUROR'S STATEMENT: Being the juror for Aqueous 2013 has been an arduous and rewarding journey. As a working artist, it was a pleasure to be offered a view into the work of so many different people dedicated to their art and painting. As demonstrated throughout all the submissions, the wide range of both subject matter and approach signified a high level of talent.

While all of the submissions were considered, individual works began to stand out as second and third looks were given. Some demonstrated a solid cohesive concept through multiple submissions. Others excelled in technical handling, offering bold subjects in great detail. Some challenged the traditional nature of watercolor and explored subjects more abstractly, even becoming dominated by color and form. However, others appear to have a relationship to painterly concerns of other artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Miriam Schapiro, Richard Diebenkorn, and other contemporary artists.

I want to congratulate the artists that have been selected for the exhibition and encourage those who were not included to continue to paint and believe in their work. The juror process is not exact, but it is a starting point for receiving feedback and measuring our artistic progress. Lastly, I would like to thank the West Virginia Watercolor Society for both the invitation and opportunity to juror this body of work.
