See and Do

Plein Air Project returns to Main Street Philippi

Philippi Main Street is again hosting a Plein Air Project on Friday, April 26, along Main Street in Philippi as a precursor to the annual Art Stroll event that evening.

Artists in all media are invited to set up easels along Main Street anytime during daylight hours and paint whatever scenes interest them. Paintings should be finished by sundown and turned in at the Taj Moe Hal (next to Lil’ Moe’s Restaurant at 23 N. Main St.). Paintings will then be judged by a regional artist, and displayed at three banks in Philippi over the next month where banking customers will be able to vote for their favorite paintings during the exhibit. There is no fee for participating, though Main Street does ask that participants register in advance so they know the names and contact information for artists. More information is available on the event Registration Form.

Editor’s note: For WVWS members who participated in Brienne Brown’s workshop at North Bend last summer, or have taken one of Linda Elmer’s workshops on sketching, this event might provide a low-stress opportunity to practice some of your skills. I participated in the inaugural Philippi Plein Air Project event in 2017, had a good time, and completed two paintings (both of which were purchased at the end of the exhibit). For the most part, people were curious, but polite, and Tammy Stemple and the Main Street volunteers were helpful and supportive.
